Grand Marais Arts Festival:
One Grand Celebration of the Arts
The Grand Marais Arts Festival is an annual celebration of the vibrant arts community here in Cook County. As we began preparing for the 20th anniversary of the Festival this year, we learned that the tradition was older than expected.
The Arts Festival started in the late 60’s with a committee of artists in Lutsen that gathered together to show their artwork to the public. Clearly, they had the right idea because nearly 40 years later, Cook County – and now Grand Marais - is a nexus that brings people together to create, celebrate and purchase beautiful works of art.
This year roughly 2,000 people strolled downtown Grand Marais to visit the Arts Festival. People stopped to watch glass artist (and GMAC instructor) Dan Neff create delicate glass marbles with a giant torch. Kids’ (and adults!) had their arms and faces painted with whimsical animals and designs by local artist Tim Young before stopping to tie-dye a t-shirt and listen to storyteller Rose Arrowsmith-Decoux. Various local musicians (including Michael Monroe and Briand Morrison) played while the gentle waves of Lake Superior sounded the tempo. It was a glorious weekend with, oh so, many things to do! Join us next year to experience it for yourself!
We also invite you to participate as a vendor. Applications are sent out in January and we jury the festival in March. Contact the Art Colony if you are interested in applying for next year’s festival. A big Thank You to everyone who participated this year!
